0 0Rock Out With Your Shamrock Out
Events | 03.15.10 | by Matt Harrington
Richmond kicked off the outdoor festival season on Saturday with Shamrock the Block in Shockoe Bottom. The daylong festival included Celtic bands, Irish beer and lots of people wearing silly green hats. With snow still fresh on the mind of Richmonders, a mild day with occasional bursts of warm sunshine was a welcome respite for folks as they shook off the winter cobwebs and got back to doing what they do best – socializing outdoors.
Not only did Shamrock the Block officially start the outdoor festival season here in Richmond, it also celebrates one of the most fun (and most misunderstood) holidays in the year. What is there to understand, really? People wear green and drink a lot of beer because some leprechaun played a flute and drove the snakes out of Ireland. Right? Something like that.
St. Patrick’s Day celebrations play a huge role in American society, with parties and festivals being held in every city across the country. We’re lucky to have two block parties celebrating Irish heritage – last week’s Shamrock the Block and this week’s Church Hill Irish Festival. If you didn’t make it to Shamrock, it is required that you attend the Irish Festival, lest your RVA Citizenship card be taken away.
The 25th Annual Church Hill Irish Festival gets underway on Saturday, March 20th at 10am with a parade that includes Irish music, bagpipers and dancing. The block party hits the street in front of St. Patrick’s Church on North 25th through 7pm on Saturday, then until 6pm on Sunday. It’s a family-friendly atmosphere with special entertainment for the kiddos like face-painting and Irish crafts. Vendors will be set up along the street selling their jewelry and tie-dye t-shirts – and of course food. Irish Lasagna made by The Ladies of St. Patrick’s and Fish & Chips from Rare Old Times Irish Pub (as well as Corned Beef and Cabbage) will fill your belly along with the Murphy’s Irish Stout.
The Church Hill Irish Festival is free, but a $2.00 donation can be given. Proceeds benefit the greater Church Hill community. So don your most festive of hats and your greenest of attire and welcome springtime with a Richmond tradition.
